FRONTBody—With Terra Cotta and No. 0 hook, ch 20, sc in 4th ch from hook, (ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch) 8 times. ROW 2—Ch 3, turn, sc between 1st 2 sc, (ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp) 8 times across to end ch-3. ROW 3— Ch 3, turn, sc in 1st ch-1 sp, (ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp) repeated across to end ch-3, ch 1, hdc in same ch-3 (an increase). Repeat Row 3 once. ROW 5—Ch 3, turn, sc in 1st ch-1 sp, (ch 1, sc in next sp) repeated across to end ch-3. Repeat Row 3 twice, Row 5 once, Row 3 twice, Row 5 twice, Row 3 twice, Row 5 once (thru Row 15), then Row 5 six times more (thru Row 21). ROW 22—Ch 3, turn, draw up a lp in each of 1st 2 ch-1 sps, yarn over and draw thru all 3 lps on hook for a decrease, (ch 1, sc in next sp) repeated across to end ch-3. Repeat once. Repeat Row 5 six times (thru Row 29), Row 3 twice and Row 5 three times (thru Row 34). ROW 35—Ch 1, turn, in next ch-1 sp make 2 dc and 4 tr, dc and 2 hdc in next sp, (sc in next sp, sc in next sc) twice, hdc in next sp, hdc in next sc, (dc in next sp, dc in next sc) 4 times, dc in next sp, hdc in next sc, hdc in next sp, (sc in next sc, sc in next sp) twice, 2 hdc and dc in next sp, 4 tr and 2 dc in next sp, sc in end ch-3. Then work sc around Body to base of 1st ear, join and fasten off.

Tail—With Terra Cotta ch 8, sk 1 ch, sc in next 7 ch. Work following rows in back lps only. ROW 2—Ch 1, turn, sc in 7 sc. Repeat thru Row 20. Working across top with 1 st in end of each row, make a sc-decrease in 1st 2 rows, sk 1 row, hdc in next 2 rows, dc in next 10 rows, hdc in next 2 rows, sk 1 row, sc-decrease in 2 end rows. Fasten off. Working across bottom edge with Scarlet Floss and No. 5 hook, sc in 1st row, * ch 1, 3 long sc in center of next rib, inserting hook ½” down below edge, ch 1, sc between ribs. Repeat from * across to corner. Fasten off. Sew top of Tail to bottom of Body.

Branch—With Brown Floss ch 6, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 1, 2 sc, 2 hdc and 6 dc in ring. Working in back lps only make dc in 10 sts around and around without joining until skein is almost used up, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts, sl st in next. Sew end tog. Sew across joining of Body and Tail.

Foot—With Red Floss (ch 10, sk 1 ch, sc in next 3 ch, hdc in next 5 ch, sc in next ch) 3 times. (Sc between toes, sc in next toe) twice across top. Fasten off. Make 2 pieces. Sew over Branch as illustrated.

Eye—With Terra Cotta ch 6, join with sl st to form ring. ROW 1—Ch 1, 10 sc in ring. Do not join rows but mark end of each row. ROW 2—Sc in front lp of 1st sc, (2 sc in front lp of next sc, sc in next sc) repeated around. ROW 3—Sc in remaining back lp of 1st sc in Row 1 behind last row, (2 sc in back lp of next sc in Row 1, sc in next sc) repeated around. ROWS 4 and 5—(Sc in both lps of next sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeated for 2 rows. ROW 6—(Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeated around, sl st in next sc. Fasten off. Edge—With Scarlet Floss and No. 5 hook, make a long sc over last row, inserting hook down between last 2 rows, (ch 2, a long sc over next sc) repeated around to within 1 ¼” of start of row. Fasten off. Make a 2d Eye and sew tog. across 1 ¼” gap in Edge Row.

Beak—With Terra Cotta ch 2, 5 sc in 2d ch from hook. Without joining and working in back lps only, make sc in 5 sc around and around for 1 ¾”. (A decrease in next 2 sc) 3 times. Sew end tog. Sew Beak between eyes with pointed end down. Pupil—With Black Floss ch 5, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 1, 8 sc in ring, join and fasten off. Make two. Sew one in center of each Eye. Sew Eyes on Head as illustrated.

BACK—Repeat Body thru Row 17. ROW 18—Ch 3, turn, sc in next ch-1 sp, (ch 1, sc in next sp) twice, ch 9, sk 4 sps, sc in next sp, complete row in pattern. ROW 19—Ch 3, turn, sc in 1st ch-1 sp, (ch 1, sc in next sc) 8 times, ch 1, sc in 1st st of ch- 9, (ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch) 4 times, (ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times. Repeat Row 5 twice (thru Row 21). Repeat from Row 22 to end.

Thumb—With Terra Cotta follow directions on patternbook page. Repeat Tail except omit Scarlet Edge. Sew to Body. Sew Front and Back tog. leaving top of head open. Cover a bone ring with sc in Terra Cotta and sew to Back 1″ below top. Steam and press dry on back thru a cloth.

Each motif measures about 2 ¼ inches.

672 motifs, 21 x 32 are required for afghan.

Plastic crochet hook No. 5 or G.

FLOWER: With any Color ch 2, 8 s c in 2nd st from hook, join.

Next Row. Ch 4, 2 tr c in same space, leaving last loop of each st on hook, yarn over and pull through all loops at one time, ch 4, sl st in same space, sl st in next s c, repeat from beginning 7 times (8 petals) , cut yarn.

With Black, join in center of any petal, ch 5, s c in center of next petal, * ch 5, sl st in top of s c just made for picot (corner), ch 5, s c in next petal, ch 5, s c in next petal, repeat from * twice, ch 5, sl st in top of last s c just made, ch 5, join in 1st petal, cut yarn.

COATS & CLARK’S O.N.T. “SPEED-CRO-SHEEN” MER­CERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 1 ball each of No. 43 Dk. Yellow, No. 48 Hunter’s Green and No. 126 Spanish Red.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).
1 pair of rubber soles—small, medium or large.

GAUGE: 1 pattern stripe makes 1 inch; 3 pattern sts make 1 inch.

LOWER BAND … With Spanish Red make a chain to reach around outer edge of sole, having a number of sts divisible by 3. Join. 1st rnd: Sc in same place, * ch 3, dc in same place as sc, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * around. Join. 2nd rnd:Sl st to cen­ter ch of first ch-3, sc in same place, * ch 2, sc in center ch of next ch-3. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. This completes Lower Band. Sew to sole.

A red handkerchief, 12 inches square.

HEART (Make 36) … Starting at center with White, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: In ring make 4 sc, half dc, 4 dc, 3 tr, ch 3, 3 tr, 4 dc, half dc and 3 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, ch 4, skip 2 sc, (dc in next st, ch 1) 9 times; in next sp make 3 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc; (ch 1, dc in next st) 9 times; ch 4, sl st in first sc. 3rd rnd: 5 sc in next sp, 2 sc in each of next 9 sps, sc in next 3 dc, 5 sc in next sp, sc in next 3 dc, 2 sc in each of next 9 sps, 5 sc in next sp. Sew or crochet the sections together leaving opening at bottom for filling. To set in the diamond section for throat and mouth begin at the 1st decrease at front of head and work down.

Fill dog with cotton, close opening and sew ears in position.

Embroider the nose in Brown and the nostrils in Red. The eyes are outlined in Tan with a Brown French Knot in the center.

TO ASSEMBLE—Sew under sections to upper sections, then sew both sections together leaving opening in bottom for filling. Sew in sections for feet. Fill with kapok and sew open­ing. Attach ears and tusks. Fill tail with kapok and sew in position. Sew buttons in position for eyes.
BLANKET—With Pink ch 29, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1, turn.
Next Row—1 s c in each s c, ch 1, turn. Repeat last row until work measures 4 inches, cut yarn. Work a row of s c across each short end.
FRINGE—Cut 4 inch strands of yarn. Using 1 strand double in half and knot fringe in every other s c across each short end. Trim with sequins as illustrated.

CHADWICK’S RED HEART NYLON, 3 Ply, Shrink-and-Moth Proof, Art. E.260: 15 skeins (1 oz. “Tangle-Proof” Pull-Out Skeins) of No. 1 White and 2 skeins each of No. 679 Nile Green, No. 802 Baby Blue, No. 723 Baby Pink and No. 261 Maize.

Clark’s O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 5.

Use yarn double throughout.

GAUGE: Each motif measures 3 ½ inches square.

COLOR MOTIF . . . Starting at center with Nile Green, ch 2. 1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook, drop loop from hook. Hereafter work in back loop only. 2nd rnd: Leaving Green loop free, attach White to first sc, sc in same place, * 3 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. 1st round: Pull loop on hook up to same height as a DC, * yarn over hook, draw up a loose loop in ring, repeat from * twice (7 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 6 loops, yarn over and draw through 2 remaining loops, ch 1 (bean stitch), ch 2, repeat from * 7 more times, join with slip st in tip of first bean st.

2nd round: With White, work a bean stitch in tip of first bean stitch on round below, pick up Pink, draw through loop on hook and work 3 DC in space between first and second bean stitches, on the 3rd DC pick up White and work a bean stitch in tip of next bean st, pick up Pink, draw through ch of bean stitch and work 3 DC in next space, continue around row, always work­ing a bean stitch with White in tip of bean stitch of round below and working 3 DC with Pink be­tween bean stitches, in last space work 3 DC and join with slip st in tip of first bean stitch.

3rd round: Pick up White and work a bean stitch in tip of bean stitch below, pick up Pink, 1 DC between bean stitch and first DC, 1 DC in each of next 3 DC, continue around row, working a bean stitch with White in tip of each bean stitch and 4 DC between bean stitches with Pink, join 4th DC of last group with slip st in first bean stitch.

4th round: Continue as before, working bean stitches with White but working 6 DC with Pink, increasing as follows: 1 DC between first bean stitch and first DC, 1 DC in each of next 3 DC, 2 DC in 4th DC, 2 DC in space after next bean stitch, 1 DC in each of 4 DC, continue around, working 2 DC in space before and after the 4th, 6th and 8th bean stitches, join in first bean stitch.

5th round: Work same as 4th round, increasing before and after the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th bean stitches (8 DC between bean stitches), join round, break off White.

6th round: With Pink, ch 3, 1 DC in each of 8 DC between bean stitches, 2 DC before and after the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th bean stitches and 1 DC in the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th bean stitches, join in 3rd st of ch 3.

7th round: Ch 3, skip 1 st, 1 SC in next st, repeat from * to first corner, ch 5 for corner loop, con­tinue around, working a ch 5 loop over each cor­ner and 10 ch 3 loops between corners, join with slip st in first loop and fasten off.

Make 20 squares in all. Join on last round, hav­ing 4 squares in width and 5 squares in length of carriage robe.

Joining: To join squares, ch 1, insert hook in cen­ter st of corresponding ch 3 loop on adjacent square, draw yarn through both loops, ch 1, skip 1 DC, 1 SC in next st; join each ch 3 loop to corre­sponding loop on next square and join 3rd st of each corner ch 5 loop to 3rd st of corner loops. When all squares are joined, work edging.

Edging: 1st row: With Pink, work 3 SC in each ch-3 loop and 5 SC in each corner loop, join in 1st SC and break off.

2nd row: With White, * 1 SC in center st of 3 SC on edge, 7 DC in center st of next group of 3 SC, repeat from * around, spacing shells on corner loops so that robe will lie flat, join in first SC and break off.

3rd row: With Pink, * 1 SC in center DC of first shell, 7 Tr in SC between shells, repeat from * around, join in first SC and break off.

2nd Round. 2 s c in each of the next 3 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 11 s c, 2 s c in each of the next 3 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 11 s c.

3rd Round. * 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * twice, 1 s c in each of the next 12 s c, 2 s c in next s c, * s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * once, 1 s c in each of the next 11 s c.

4th and 5th Rounds. 1 s c in each s c on sides increasing 3 s c evenly spaced around each end in each round (52 s c in last round), sl st in next st to even round, ch 1, turn.

6th Round. 1 s c in each s c picking up entire st by inserting hook around entire st, join, ch 1, turn.

7th Round. 1 s c in each s c, do not join. Repeat the last round twice. Fold in half lengthwise and mark center for toe.

10th Round. 1 s c in each s c decreasing 3 s c evenly spaced around toe (to decrease: * insert hook in next st, pull loop through, repeat from * once, yarn over and work off all loops at one time).

Next Round. 2 s c in each ch 1 mesh, join.

10 ounces Shell Pink for LOOP ST CAP AND MITTENS or color of your choice
Plastic Crochet Hook Size J OR ANY SIZE HOOK WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE BELOW

GAUGE: 3 sc = 1 inch, 3 rows = 1 inch

LOOP STITCH CAP

CENTER SECTION: With Shell Pink work in same manner as center section of Basic Cap Pattern but working all even rows in double loop sts (double loop st: wind yarn twice around index finger, insert hook in st, pick up the 2 loops from finger and pull through st, complete sc), cut yarn.

SIDE SECTIONS: Work 1st row same as 1st row of side section of Basic Cap Pattern. 2nd ROW: 1 double loop st in each of the 1st 3 sc, * skip next sc, 1 double loop st in each of the next 3 sc, repeat from * across row. Work remainder of section in same manner working all even rows in double loop sts. Work other side section to correspond. With wrong side of work toward you work a row of double loop sts around entire cap working 1 double loop st in each st and in each row on sides of Cap. If desired a row of slip stitches (sl sts) may be worked around entire Cap. Work ties in same manner as Basic Cap Pattern.

LOOP STITCH MITTENS

With Shell Pink ch 19 (6 inches long), join to form a ring, ch 1 and work 1 double loop st in each of the 1st 10 sts of ch and 1 sc in each of the next 9 sts, join, ch 1 to turn all rounds. 2nd ROUND: 1 sc in each st (19 sts), join. 3rd ROUND: 1 double loop st in each of the 1st 10 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 9 sts, join. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rounds twice. 8th ROUND: Working in sc decrease 2 sts evenly spaced in both front and back sections (15 sc). 9th ROUND: 1 double loop st in each of the 1st 8 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 7 sts, join. 10th ROUND: Same as 8th round (11 sts). 11th ROUND: 1 double loop st in each of the 1st 6 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, join, cut yarn leaving a length for sewing. Draw sts together and sew firmly. With Shell Pink work remainder of mitten and ties same as Basic Mittens Pattern omitting pompons.

CHADWICK’S RED HEART BABY BUNT­ING POMPADOUR, 3 balls (¾ oz. balls).
Crochet Hook, Size G.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.
2 small pearl buttons.
2 yards of narrow ribbon.

GAUGE: (With G hook) 5 sts make 1 inch; (sc with single yarn and No. 1 hook) 6 sts make 1 inch.

SHOES (Sole) … Starting at heel with double strand of yarn and No. 1 hook, ch 6. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: 2 sc in 1st sc, sc in each st across, 2 sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in each st across (9 sts). Ch 1, turn. Repeat last row until piece meas­ures 3¼ inches in all. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Skip 1st sc, sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last row until 5 sts re­main (Toe). Fasten off.

UPPER (Toe Piece) … With single strand of yarn and G hook, ch 7 to meas­ure 1¼ inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (6 sts). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in 1st st (tr in next st, sc in next st) twice; sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in first 2 sts, (tr in next st, sc in next st) twice. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: Same as 3rd row. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows once more. Ch 32 (to measure about 6 inches), drop loop from hook, insert hook in first st of last row and, being careful not to twist chain, draw dropped loop through. Now work the Side of Upper as follows: 1st rnd: (The wrong side of Toe Piece is facing). Ch 1, work sc in each of 32 ch, work 7 sc along side of Toe Piece, 6 sc along opposite side of foundation chain and 7 sc along other side (52 sc). Join with sl st in 1st sc made. Ch 1, turn. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * tr in next st, sc in next st. Repeat from * around, end­ing with tr in last st. Join. Ch 1, turn. 3rd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, sc in each st around (52 sts). Ch 1, turn. 4th rnd: Tr in same place as sl st, * sc in next st, tr in next st. Repeat from * around, ending with sc in last st. Join. Ch 1, turn. 5th rnd: Same as 3rd rnd. Repeat 2nd to 5th rnds incl until piece measures 1¼ inches (measuring from chain), ending with either the 3rd or 5th rnd. Fasten off. Sew lower edge of Upper along outer edge of Sole.

STRAP … With single strand of yarn and G hook, ch 27 (to measure about 5½ inches). 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in 2 sc, ch 2, skip 2 sts for buttonhole, * sc in next st, tr in next st. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each st and in each ch across. Fasten off.
Sew button to end of strap opposite buttonhole. Sew strap in place along cen­ter top 1½ inches of Upper, having but­ton at side of ankle. Make a tiny ribbon bow and sew in center of Toe Piece.

MITTENS … Starting at top of cuff with G hook, ch 33 to measure 6½ inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Join with sl st in 1st sc (32 sts). Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 5th rnds incl: Same as 2nd to 5th rnds of Side of Upper. Repeat 2nd to 5th rnds incl until cuff measures 1½ inches, end­ing with either the 3rd or 5th rnd. Ch 1, turn. Change to No. 1 hook.Next rnd: (Right side facing) Sc in each st around. Do not join rnds. Repeat last rnd until piece measures 2½ inches from end of cuff. Next rnd: Sc in each st around, de­creasing 4 sts evenly around—to dec, work off 2 sc as 1 scFollowing rnd: Sc in each st around. Repeat last 2 rnds alternately until 20 sts remain on the rnd, being careful increases do not fall di­rectly over each other. Next rnd: Work off 2 sts as 1 st all around (10 sts). Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch length of yarn. Thread a needle with this length and run through remaining sts. Pull tight and darn in end on wrong side. Run ½ yard of ribbon in and out around wrist. Tie in a bow.

BOTTLE COVER (Bottom) … With No. 1 hook, ch 2. 1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join rnds. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts). 3rd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc (an inc). Repeat from * around (24 sts). 4th rnd: Sc in each sc, increasing as necessary to keep work flat. Repeat last rnd until piece measures 2 inches in diameter. Sl st in next st. Fasten off.

SIDE…Starting at bottom with G hook, ch 35 to measure 7 inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (34 sts). Join with sl st in 1st sc made, thus forming a ring. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 5th rnds incl: Same as 2nd to 5th rnds of Side of Upper. Repeat 2nd to 5th rnds until Side measures 5 inches. Change to No. 1 hook, ch 6, * sc in 3rd ch from hook, skip 1 st, dc in next st, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in 3rd st of starting chain. Fasten off. Run ribbon through beading and tie in a bow.

Baby Bootee I

MATERIAL-1 skein of color and 1 skein white Woolco Shetland Floss. No. 4 Woolco hook.

With color chain 38, join. Chain 2 at end of every row.

1ST ROW-1 double crochet in each stitch.

2D ROW-Pineapple stitch. Draw yarn through 1st stitch, skip 1 chain, draw a loop through next stitch, wrap, take off 3 loops, chain 1. *Draw a loop through same stitch as last loop, skip 1 stitch, draw a loop through next stitch, wrap, take off 3 loops, chain 1.* Repeat between stars.

3D AND 4TH ROWS-Same as 2d row.

5TH AND 6TH ROWS-White.

7TH, 8TH, 9TH ROWS-Color.

With white *skip 1 space, 1 single crochet in next space, skip 1 space, 6 double crochet in next space, * repeat.

With color make *1 single crochet and 1 chain* in every stitch. Fasten off. With white make a single crochet in each stitch of original chain. Join. Chain 1, make 25 single crochet, turn, chain 1, make 12 single crochet. On the 12 stitches work 12 rows. Then make a single crochet in each row, across the back, in each row on the other side of instep, and across front. Make 4 rows. Then decrease 1 stitch on each corner of toe, and in back, for 3 rows. Join with slip stitch. Fasten off. Finish with cord and balls.
